How to Keep Baby Entertained in the Backseat While Travelling
Travelling by car with your baby can have some great perks: not having to stay in line at customs, being able to bring more stuff with you… but how do you keep them entertained in the backseat? Here are some fun tips and tricks!
A Muffin on the Road Playlist
Everybody loves a good karaoke session! Try putting on our A Muffin on the Road Playlist and sing along with the songs that we picked to lighten up your road trip!
Games
If putting some upbeat songs doesn’t work, you can try playing fun games with your baby! Here are some fun game ideas to play during your family road trip:
- Grow a story: Mommy and Daddy could start telling a story, then encourage your toddler to continue it. You can then take turns into adding pieces and details to the story. This is a great way to stimulate your baby’s creativity and imagination.
You might be surprised to see which amazing story plots come out of this game! - I Spy with My Little Eye: this game is a great game to enhance baby’s observation skills and review the alphabet together! By taking advantage of the ever-changing views that you can see from the car windows, everyone in the car picks an object and says “I spy with my little eye something that starts with the letter …”
If your baby doesn’t know the alphabet yet, you could use color or shapes. The sky’s the limit! - Silent Game: most newbie parents love this one! 😉
The only rule of the game is to stay silent, the first one to talk or laugh loses!
Give them a New Toy
A fun idea to keep them distracted is to buy them a new toy a couple of days before leaving, then giving it to them the day of your road trip. This way, they’ll be so engaged with their new toy that the time will fly!
Your baby will instantly be in a better mood; it’s a great way to start the trip with the right foot!
Hand them a Book
A more educational alternative would be to give them a good book, just make sure that it’s age appropriate. For example, you certainly can’t hand your one-year old a book that is too big for them with pages made out of thin paper: they would destroy it in a blink of an eye!
If the book has objects or different textures stitched onto it (which is great for baby’s sensory development!), check that they’re baby proofed before giving it to your baby.
Handing them a tablet or other electronic devices should always be your last resort!
White Noises and Nature Sounds
After all that play, your baby will most likely be sleepy. Put on some white noises or tranquil nature sounds to help them fall asleep. Sogni d’oro, baby!
