1. Choose a Fun Halloween Theme
Halloween is known to be the spookiest holiday of the year, but having a baby at home changes everything: the main focus shifts on making it super fun for baby, instead of scary. We suggest choosing a fun theme and , if you have a toddler, having your toddler help choose the halloween theme to make them even more involved.
Here are some super fun ideas in choosing a theme for your baby, whether you choose to dress up as a family or go solo!
- Recreate the set of their favourite cartoon or superhero. On Halloween the whole family could dress as the cast!
- Create a Halloween fantasy world of your own. It’s extra fun and helps in developing your baby’s creativity!
- You can also pick a color for each room of your house and fill it only with objects and furniture of that color. For example your living room could be all blue for the month, while the bathroom could be lilac, and so on.
- Or you can create a fantasy world where everything is nice, soft and fluffy! In which case, we have just the right decoration for you! Our Muffin Bedroom Decorations are extremely easy to set up and can also be used as an on-the-go toy once Halloween’s over. It’s made out of zero waste and safe materials, so your baby can safely play with it inside or outside the house!
- You don’t even have to choose only one theme, you could have one for each room in your house! The sky’s the limit!
We realize that creating your own Halloween theme and decorations requires a bit more effort than just setting up fake web spiders and carving a few pumpkins, but you’re gonna be more satisfied with the results, trust us!
2. See Halloween from your Baby’s Point of View & Psychology
If your baby is still a newborn, remember that your baby is developing facial recognition skills and has developed a secure attachment with you and his family.
While Halloween is a fun occasion for us to dress up and take on the identity of our favorite superheroes — yes, even us adults like to have fun and dress up — just remember that your baby may get scared if they’re not able recognize your face! This is especially true for those parents who go all out like this.

Tips to not spook your baby during their very first Halloween:
- Dress up together.
- Let your baby see you progress through your costume transformation.
- Consider staying away from face masks or face paints for your baby’s first halloween. You babies and toddlers will love it for future halloweens, but just for this first one, try keeping your face visible!
3. Child Safety during Halloween Festivities
Remember to keep your baby away from any make-up or chemical products you might use that are good for adults, but not baby-safe for their first Halloween!
- Talc
- Fragrance
- Propylene glycol
- 1,4-dioxane and ethylated surfactants
- Mineral Oils
- Parabens
- Triclosan
- Phthalates
4. Baby Proof your Halloween Decorations
After picking a theme, it’s time to shop for the materials. There are some things to keep in mind while doing so: make sure to check that the decorations are free of sharp edges or mechanical hazards — your baby will most probably try to take it off the walls and play with it, so make sure to pick safe Halloween decorations.
At the end of the day, the Halloween decorations are for your baby, so what’s the point if they can’t play and interact with it?
Another thing to check is the absence of harmful and toxic materials that could hurt your baby or toddler.
Make sure to check the flammability of the decorations chosen. Oftentimes Halloween features decorations that have flammable electrical components. Be really careful and stay away from these hazards.
All our clothing, including our Spooky sets are Class I Grade for non-flammability, meaning that they burn much more slowly than cheaper and low quality alternatives, and are much safer for your child.
Remember that the Halloween decorations that you choose are going to be all over your house, so baby proofing your decorations is critical!

5. Home Safety
Halloween, just like any holiday, often leads to family gatherings, events, and parties that call for a little due diligence: a few checks can go a long way to ensure a safe and fun halloween event!
- We suggest you check your smoke detectors and fire extinguishers are in place.
- Baby proof your appliances and pieces of furniture.
- Prep for stains, especially if you’re planning on inviting other families over.
6. Choosing the Right Costume for my Baby’s First Halloween
We all want our baby to look super cute for halloween, but remember that they are in fact still little babies. and they do not understand the concept of halloween.
Good Baby Halloween Costumes will:
- Allow unobstructed breathing.
- Be lightweight and breathable and won’t cause sweating.
- Be free of Choking Hazards.
- Make sure to choose clothing that is free of toxic chemicals! Be free of Lead, Toxic Chemicals, etc.
- Have been made from materials that were responsibly and ethically sourced and have Have undergone and passed proper Anti-Flammability tests.
Stay away from bad baby costumes that:
- Cover your baby’s face or impair breathing.
- Are too hot for your baby. You don’t want them sweating inside that halloween baby suit!
- Shop Responsibly: stay away from cheap costumes or clothes that could expose your baby to skin rashes or irritations.
- Have choking and mechanical hazards: look out for sharp edges and easily detachable small parts.
- Pose Flammability risks due to their cheapness and low quality.
7. Have Fun & Be Creative…It’s Halloween!
As we said before, celebrating your baby’s first halloween together and as a family is a special milestone that only happens once. Make sure to get them involved not only in picking the halloween theme, but also in setting up the halloween decorations!
Choosing a costume, getting ready for the party, and decorating your home for Halloween are all great ways to bond with your whole family. Grab some safe arts and crafts materials and get your hands dirty. Have fun with it! Just remember, don’t get too spooky!
